This question was posed by a speaker at a recent Soroptomist meeting. The speaker, as a business management consultant, was discussing some common mistakes employers make with their staff.

Most of the points she made apply to any interaction between human beings. I love the simplicity of the question I used as the title of this post.

The first day I focused on being a Day Maker, I had one of the most fulfilling days of my life. It was interesting how easy it was to find opportunities to add to the day of the many people I was blessed to interact with that day. I found having the intention of wanting to make the day better for others brought me many opportunities to do just that.

The other side of the question was applying it to myself and asking in what ways am I “making my day” or “breaking my day”. I have lived long enough to know I create how my day works out by my thoughts and my intention. Thus it has great value to make a genuine effort to identify what makes or breaks my day.

I have incorporated this exercise into a “measuring stick” to use at the end of each day before falling off to sleep. It brings a happy feeling when I recall the “day making” successes I achieved. The “day breaking” episodes allow me to look honestly at myself and to proclaim to manage such situations differently the next day. It has given me a powerful and simple tool to work with and one that allows me to get closer to being the kind of person I desire to be.
